Summer School
We offer the opportunity for you to apply for institutional financial aid for a maximum of two summer terms. Students may apply for federal financial aid for each summer term of enrollment.
Students who qualify for institutional financial aid and who attend summer school will have their full, demonstrated need met for up to two Duke main campus or Marine Lab summer terms or Duke-sponsored Summer Study Abroad programs. These two terms need not be consecutive. The Duke Summer Study Abroad Financial Aid Application is a separate application process. Please note that some summer programs, such as Duke-In New York or Duke-In LA, are two-session programs, and will use both of a student’s eligible summer terms for aid. If you have already received aid for one summer term and enroll in the Duke-In NY or LA programs, we will calculate your aid eligibility for one half of the program.
Financial aid is awarded on a per-term basis. Summer Session I aid is based on financial aid eligibility for the prior academic year and Summer Session II aid is based on financial aid eligibility for the upcoming academic year. For this reason, Summer Session II aid awards CANNOT be processed until your renewal aid application file is complete. Financial Aid renewal applications are due for all returning students May 1st every year.
How to Apply for Summer Financial Aid
- Complete the appropriate Summer School Financial Aid Application
- Submit the Summer School Financial Aid Application to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline--Summer I – May 9th, Summer II – June 21st.
- If you change your course load after submitting the financial aid application, please notify the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.
Deadlines
For Summer Session I, your aid application must be submitted by May 9th. For Summer Session II, your aid application must be submitted by June 21st. Please do not turn in applications until you are certain which courses you will be taking.
Summer Study Budget Determination
The budget for summer sessions is based on the number and type of classes you take, the health insurance fee, and average estimated costs for meals, books, and personal expenses. Students living on campus will receive an allowance for actual summer housing costs. Students living off campus will receive a housing allowance based on the cost of a shared apartment in Duke’s Central Campus Apartments.
Parent Contribution Determination
The Parent Contribution for Summer I is determined by taking the prior academic year's family contribution and dividing by four (25%). If, for example the parent contribution for the academic year just ending was $10,000, the Summer I contribution would be $2,500.
The Parent Contribution for Summer II is determined by taking the upcoming academic year's family contribution and dividing by four (25%). Applications for financial aid for the upcoming academic year must be complete before any summer II aid can be awarded.
Summer Earnings Requirement
Some students may be eligible to have their summer earnings requirement (also known as the Student Contribution) for the academic year replaced with grant funds, depending on their summer activities. Such activities include attendance in summer school or study abroad, participation in a summer DukeEngage program, or some internships directly related to a student’s course of study. For application requirements see Grant Replacement of Summer Earnings.
