Grant and Scholarship Funds

Grants and scholarships, which are funds that do not need to be repaid, are available from a variety of sources including institutional, federal, state, and local sources. When packaging student aid awards, Duke will automatically include those federal and state resources for which the student is eligible. Duke grant and scholarship funds, however, generally comprise the main portion of most need-based grant awards to its students. Resources for these grants and other university aid awards are derived from a variety of sources including endowment programs and contributions to the University.

The federal government offers several grant programs designed to help support the educational expenses of eligible college and university students. The most common programs are:

  • Pell Grants, based on eligibility determined by the Department of Education's review of information provided on the FAFSA, are generally available to low-income students.
  • Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. The program gives priority to those who receive Pell Grants. Eligibility for SEOG funds is determined by the Financial Aid Office.
  • State Student Incentive Grants (SSIG) consist of federal and state funds and are made available by the student's home state.
