Glossary of Financial Aid Terms
"N" Terms
- Need Analysis
- The process that determines a student's demonstrated financial need by analyzing the information
provided by the student and his or her parents (or spouse, if applicable) on a financial aid
form(s). All students must file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal
Aid) to
apply for need-based federal financial aid programs. Duke University also requires students
and their parents seeking institutional funds to complete the PROFILE (see
568 Consensus Approach). For state financial aid programs, check with the appropriate state
agency to determine if any other application form is needed.
- Need-Based Aid
- Financial aid that is awarded based on a student's financial circumstance. Need-based aid can be awarded in the form of grants, loans, or work-study pay. Students who believe their families will need help in supporting their costs of attending Duke University are encouraged to apply for need-based aid at the time they apply for admission to the University.
